Specimen:
Blood
Collection Medium:
plus control
Green top tube 10 mL (Na Heparin) Green top tube 10 mL (Na Heparin)
Minimum:
Preferred Minimum: 5.0 mL in a green-top tube
Absolute Minimum: 1.0 mL
Delivery Instructions:
Deliver to laboratory immediately after collection. SPECIMENS MUST ARRIVE AT REFERENCE LABORATORY WITHIN 72 HOURS OF DRAW.
Specimen Instructions:
Need to draw "Normal Control" to send with specimen.

Include a control specimen drawn at the same time from a normal, unrelated, non-smoking individual: draw blood in a green-top (heparin) tube(s), and send 5.0 mL fresh heparinized whole blood to other containers. Label clearly on outermost label NORMAL CONTROL. Rubber band patient specimen and control vial together.

Note: Indicate patient's date of birth.
Analytic Time:
3 days upon receipt at reference laboratory
Reference Range:
24-30 mm Hg
Interpretive Data:
Normal: p50=24mm Hg to 30 mm Hg (with sigmoidal O2 dissociation curve)
Comments:
Abnormal oxygen-affinity is demonstrated in the presence of some hemoglobin variants:
-High oxygen-affinity causes erythrocytosis
-Low oxygen-affinity causes cyanosis

Increased oxygen-affinity of hemoglobin, reflected in a low p50, left- shifted oxygen dissociation curve, and loss of normal sigmoidal configuration, is characteristic of many hemoglobin variants that are responsible for polycythemia. Measurement of oxygen-affinity is the most important method for diagnosis of these disorders.

Cautions: To ensure valid results, the specimen must be < or =72 hours old.
Methodology:
Hemox-Analyzer Measures and Plots 0(2) Saturation
