The detection of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA is based upon the
real-time amplification and detection of specific HBV genomic DNA
sequences by PCR from total DNA extracted from the specimen. The
diagnosis of HBV infection should not rely solely upon the result of a
PCR assay. A positive PCR result should be considered in conjunction
with clinical presentation and additional established diagnostic tests
prior to establishing a diagnosis. A negative PCR result indicates only
the absence of HBV DNA in the sample tested and does not exclude the
diagnosis of disease. Equivocal results are those that fall between the
lowest limit of detection and the background level. Equivocal results
cannot be determined to be positive or negative.
