Specimen(s):
Serum or Plasma
Specimen Instructions:
Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection.
Collection Medium:
Red top tube 5 mL (Clot Activator)
Alternate Collection Media:
Lavender top tube 3 mL (EDTA) or Pink top tube 6 mL (K2-EDTA)
Minimum:
Preferred Minimum: 1 mL serum or plasma
Absolute minimum: 0.5 mL serum or plasma
Rejection Criteria:
Heparinized plasma. I.V. fluid. Vitreous fluid. Gray (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride). Hemolyzed specimens.
Turn Around Time:
Within 24 hours upon receipt at reference laboratory
Reference Range:
Fasting insulin = 3-19 uIU/mL
Interpretive Data:
To convert to pmol/L, multiply uIU/mL by 6.0. The reference interval for a fasting insulin is 3-19 uIU/mL.

This assay reacts on a nearly equimolar basis with the analogs insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro. Insulin detemir exhibits approximately 50 percent cross-reactivity. Test reactivity with insulin glulisine is negligible (<3 percent).
Methodology:
Quantitative Chemiluminescent Immunoassay
