July 16, 2008 - Enhancing Physician Communication Skills to Decrease Risk

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, many health professionals communicate using "the language of their specialty as a result of their training and work environment," which can affect how they communicate with the public. Older adults are one of the populations at risk for not being able to fully understand basic health information.

In this presentation, Dr. Gutshall will discuss the many issues in medicine that add to the complexity of patient care in the community and within health systems. By applying improved communication skills and reinforcing the need for patient-centered care, and using a team approach to improve communication skills, the importance of the effective exchange of information across the continuum will be recognized as a crucial component in providing high quality, safe, and efficient patient care.
