The Geriatric Lecture Series is presented from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
on the 3rd Wednesday of each month over the Integrated Services Digital
Network (ISDN), a dial-up system that uses regular telephone lines
to digitally transmit information among multiple sites. Selected
sessions may also be presented over the Iowa Communications Network
(ICN), the advanced fiber-optic telecommunication network linking
nearly 650 sites across the state.
The Geriatric Lecture Series is
sponsored by the Iowa Geriatric Education Center and the University
of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College
of Medicine. This continuing medical education activity is supported through an independent education grant from Merck.
Target Audience
This continuing education activity is of particular value and importance
to physicians and nurses who work with the geriatric patient.
Purpose
This series of monthly lectures is devoted to topics in clinical
geriatrics designed to teach important principles in the management
of older persons.
Educational Objectives
By participating in this activity, learners will be able to:
- Improve
their overall knowledge about managing common geriatric syndromes
(functional decline, dementia, incontinence, etc.).
- Understand
the unique healthcare needs of older patients, differences
in the management of common clinical conditions,
and how physiologic
changes associated with aging impact management.
- Develop a
working knowledge of important legal and ethical issues associated
with end-of-life care.
- Understand and apply principles of the multi-disciplinary
geriatric assessment.
Registration
The $45.00 fee covers the cost of the entire series and is
charged to cover instruction and the award of continuing
education
credit for
physicians, physician assistants, nurses and nurse practitioners.
The
fee structure encourages series participation. Participants
may attend one, several, or all of the series presentations
and, thereby, receive the appropriate credit hour. The fee is
$45.00 per person, regardless
of the number of sessions attended.
The fee will be waived
for residents, fellows, and UI College of Medicine clinical faculty
as well as physicians
with
a clinical or adjunct appointment
at the University of Iowa.
CME ACCREDITATION: The
University of Iowa College of Medicine is accredited
by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
The
University of Iowa College of Medicine designates each
offering in this series for a maximum of 1.0 hour towards
the AMA Physician's Recognition
Award. Each physician should claim only those hours
of credit that he/she actually spent in the activity.
