Jose
Ness, MD - Ask the Expert Panel Coordinator
Dr. Ness is an assistant professor in the Department of Internal Medicine
at the University of Iowa, and the coordinator for the Ask the Expert
panel within the Iowa Geriatric Education Center. He earned his medical
degree from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1991.
He finished an internship at the Hospital Universitario Pedro Ernesto
in Rio de Janeiro in 1996, and residency at Beth Israel Medical Center
in New York City. Then, in 1999, he completed a fellowship in geriatrics
at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Ness' clinical interest
lies in the area of geriatric medicine. His research interests include
geriatric cardiology, complementary and alternative medicine, and functional
health literacy.

Gerald
Jogerst, MD
Dr. Jogerst is an associate professor and Associate Department Head in
the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Iowa, where he
is also the director of the geriatrics fellowship. He received his medical
degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in 1976, and completed
a residency in family medicine and a geriatrics fellowship at Scottsdale
Memorial Hospital in Arizona from 1976 to 1981. He holds a CAQ in Geriatrics.
Dr. Jogerst’s clinical interests include geriatric assessments
and brief screening tools for detecting depression, dementia, and functional
impairment. He has conducted research in elder abuse, international family
medicine training, and methods of teaching geriatric medicine.

Susan
Schultz, MD
Dr. Schultz is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry
in the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She received her MD degree
in 1990 from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and completed
residency training and a fellowship in the neurobiology of major psychoses
at the University of Iowa. Her research has focused on the treatment
of late-life psychoses and dementia, neuroimaging in late life, and aging
in schizophrenia.

Michael
Kelly, PharmD, MS
Dr. Kelly is a clinical pharmacist and associate professor in the Department
of Family Medicine and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa.
He received his BSPh from the University of Iowa in 1973, his PharmD
degree in 1988, and his MS degree in Clinical and Hospital Pharmacy in
1989. He provides clinical services to ambulatory patients and inpatients
and participates in the training of pharmacy, medical, and physician
assistant students and residents. Dr. Kelly also conducts research on
improving drug therapy and compliance in elderly patients.

Paula
Mobily, PhD, RN
Dr. Mobily is an associate professor in the University of Iowa College
of Nursing. She graduated from The Ohio State University with her BSN
degree in 1971. She earned a MSN degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing from
the University of Cincinnati in 1976 and a PhD in Higher Education Administration
from the University of Iowa in 1987. Dr. Mobily completed a fellowship
in the Geriatric Education Program at the University of Iowa. Her interests
in pain assessment and management, especially nonpharmacologic management,
has prompted her research.

Sheri
McKay, MSN, ARNP
Ms. McKay is a geriatric nurse practitioner at the University of Iowa
Hospitals and Clinics, and an adjunct faculty member in the UI College
of Nursing. She graduated from Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing
in 1964, and received her BSN degree from Wesleyan College in 1993. Ms.
McKay went on to earn her MSN from the University of Iowa in 1998, and
also became certified as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. Her emphasis
has been gerontology and psychiatric nursing in acute, long-term, and
home health care.

Keela
Herr, PhD, RN
Dr. Herr is a professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing
and serves as the Chair of the Adult and Gerontological Nursing Area.
She graduated with her BSN from Northeast Missouri State University.
Dr. Kerr received her MSN degree in medical-surgical nursing in 1977,
and her PhD in nursing in 1986, both from the University of Texas. Dr.
Herr’s research interests focus on the problem of pain in older
adults, especially in pain assessment and improving end-of-life care.

Lisa
Zaynab Killinger, DC
Dr. Killinger is an assistant professor at the Palmer Center for Chiropractic
research, where she teaches courses on healthy aging, public health,
and research methods. She graduated from the Palmer College of Chiropractic
in 1983. Dr. Killinger has directed or assisted on nine HRSA projects
related to geriatrics and interdisciplinary programs.

Gretchen
Schmuch, MS, LSW
Ms. Schmuch is a geriatric social worker in the University of Iowa Hospitals
and Clinics Geriatric Assessment clinic and the University of Iowa Department
of Family Medicine. She received her MSW degree from the University of
Iowa in 1986. She is a member of the Johnson County Senior Coalition
and the Johnson County Multidisciplinary Task Force on Dependent Adult
abuse, and Johnson County Case Management for the Frail Elderly. Ms.
Schmuch also serves on the Geriatric Management Team at two local nursing
homes.
