Screening and Brief Intervention for Alcohol and Drug Use
As of July 2008, Iowa became one of a few states whose Medicaid program specifically covers screening and brief intervention for alcohol and drug use. The details of this are found in the following informational letter.
Recommended Screening Instruments:
Instruments for screening for both Alcohol and Substance abuse are recommended, but not mandated. Rather, there must be a clear process in place by which the screening is done and documented in the medical record.
For alcohol screening the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) is the recommended tool. Complete information on the use of this tool, developed by the World Health Organzation can be found here. This is a simple, 10 item instrument that can either be administered via an interview or a self-report questionairre. A brief version of the AUDIT questionaire with automated web-based scoring can be accessed here.
For screening for substances of abuse other than alcohol, the DAST ( Drug Abuse Screening Test) is recommended. An on-line version with automated web-based scoring can be accessed here.
