Dietetic Internship Program

Overview

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your inquiry concerning the Dietetic Internship Program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC).  This institution, one of the largest university-owned teaching hospitals in the nation, has conducted a dietetic internship since 1923.  The UIHC Dietetic Internship Program is a challenging 10-month post-baccalaureate program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE) of The American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 South Riverside Drive, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL 60606, 312-899-0040, ext 5400.  CADE is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education

Rotation, classes and other learning experiences are designed to meet the Standards of Education and the Competency Statement for Supervised Practice Programs established by CADE.  The emphasis of the internship program is a general emphasis offering management, clinical, research, and community experiences.  This design allows the dietetic intern to achieve entry-level knowledge and skills in all areas of dietetics.  The program also provides 9 hours of graduate credit in the College of Public Health in addition to the work experience to make it an intensive program.  Following completion of the internship, the graduate credit earned may be applied toward an advanced degree.

Upon completion of the Dietetic Internship at UIHC, the graduates receive a Verification Statement making them eligible to sit for the registration examination to become Registered Dietitians.  Over the last five years, the pass rate for the registration examination for our graduates has been 88%.  As graduates of the UI Hospitals and Clinics Dietetic Internship, your status to prospective employers is very high.  Many of our graduates have gone on to be leaders in the dietetic profession including those who have served as president of The American Dietetic Association.

The UI Hospitals and Clinics and Department of Food and Nutrition Services are committed to making this internship a very dynamic program.  Feel free to contact us if you have questions after reading the materials.

Sincerely,

Laurie Kroymann, RD, LD, MBA
Dietetic Internship Director
