Financial Assistance

The internship is a full-time educational experience, and, although outside employment is allowed, it must not interfere with the internship.  Some opportunities to earn additional income may be provided by the Department of Food and Nutrition Services.

The American Dietetic Association Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships to students who are applying to dietetic internships. Applications should be requested from the ADA Foundation in the student's senior year.  Dietetic interns are also eligible for guaranteed loans and for deferment of student loans during the internship. To apply for University of Iowa financial aid, the student must be accepted into the Graduate College.

Time Commitment

An intern reviews a chart with the staff dietitianUniversity of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics dietetic internship is a rigorous educational experience.  The 9 hours of graduate study combined with 10 months of clinical experience result in an intensive program that requires study and class time beyond the usual 40-hour work week.

Interns are scheduled for a 40-hour work week including some weekends and holidays. Four personal days are allowed. In addition, one week vacation is scheduled at Christmas/New Year's and one week is scheduled in the spring.

Housing

A variety of condominiums and apartments may be found within walking distance of University Hospitals.  Housing should be secured sometime in May or June for occupancy in August.

One-and-a-half miles from the hospital, attractive and comfortable University housing for student families is available. To apply for student housing, one need not have been accepted but only applied for admission to the university. Since the waiting list for this housing is long, those interested should apply immediately.

Personal Appearance

Interns are expected to dress as a professional at all times.  Your dress reflects your professional image and competence to patients and hospital staff.  White uniforms and safety shoes are not required. Three lab coats and a name tag are supplied to each intern for use during the internship. White lab coats are supplied and worn over professional street clothes.

Transportation

It is not essential for interns to have a car, and parking is very limited on campus.  Iowa City and Coralville bus service is inexpensive and convenient to most areas.  The University operates a free bus system called CAMBUS, which serves outlying University areas such as student family housing as well as points around the downtown campus.

Insurance

A Student Health fee is required of all University of Iowa students. This enables physician consultations in the Student Health Services to be free of charge.
