FAQs FOR UI COURSE DIRECTORS, AND PROGRAM PLANNERS

How does one apply for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ for an educational program?

Please contact the CME Division, 100 CMAB, The University of Iowa 319/335-8599 and ask for Susan, Molly, or Lori. We will arrange to meet with you to explain the application process.

How much advance notice is required?

If we are also doing your event planning, we ask that you notify us 9-12 months in advance of your proposed meeting date. If you are just applying for CME credit, the lead time can be shorter. You cannot send out an announcement indicating that CME credit has been applied for. You need approval from our office first.

What types of programs qualify for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™?

Within the broader context of continuing physician professional development (CPPD), the AMA defines CME as:

Consisting of educational activities that serve to maintain, develop, or increase knowledge, skills, professional performance, and relationships a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public, and the profession. CME represents that body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine, and the provision of health care to the public.

CME activities must:

What if I want to request approval for an internal series like a Grand Rounds, Case Conference, Journal Club, M & M conference, or Tumor Board?

Applications for Regularly Scheduled Series (RSS) are accepted twice a year - in July and January. For additional information about internal series, please contact Katie Coleman 319/335-8600 or kathleen-coleman@uiowa.edu .

For CME, what disclosure and conflict of interest review procedures do I need to follow?

Everyone involved in the planning process for a CME activity must disclose well in advance of the program date and be reviewed for potential conflict of interest. If a person involved in program planning does NOT disclose, they must be removed from the program. If a conflict cannot be resolved or managed, that individual must also be removed from the program.

Can I disclose online?

Yes. You should also note that there are currently four online disclosure databases at UI due to varied requirements and regulations from a number of sectors. It is hoped they will soon be combined into a single disclosure portal. In the meantime, the CME Disclosure site is https://webapps1.healthcare.uiowa.edu/CMEDisclosure/OutUI_Login.aspx

How do speakers and instructors make their disclosures known to attendees? (Required at all CME events.)

CME faculty may disclose using a handout, a PowerPoint slide, or verbally. (Verbal script for disclosure.) Disclosures must be made to attendees PRIOR to the presentation or instruction.
