Mission Statement

Diabetes mellitus is now a world-wide epidemic. No country in the world is spared -- the incidence of this disease is increasing everywhere. In the United States some 26 million persons are thought to be affected. Almost three times this many have a condition called prediabetes. Those with prediabetes have a several-fold increased risk of progressing to overt diabetes. If nothing is done to stem this tide, the U.S. may face the prospect of having as many as 100 million people with diabetes by 2050. The problems in dealing with this disease, from the perspective of the patient, his/her family, the workplace, and the tremendous financial burden combine to make the correction of this situation a major medical and societal challenge.

In recognition of this, the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) and the University of Iowa formed a partnership to create the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center (FOEDRC). Formally organized in 2008, the mission of the FOEDRC is to conduct research into the causes, prevention and treatment of diabetes. Obesity, a parallel epidemic of equal importance, will also be studied, as obesity is a prime contributor to type II diabetes. (See "Learn About Diabetes").
