Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is caused by the presence of an extra #21 chromosome. Individuals with Down syndrome have unique physical characteristics such as:

Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
Flat facial profile
Upwardly slanted eyes
Small low-set ears
Short stature
Mental retardation
Small nose with a low nasal bridge
Spots at the periphery of the iris

These individuals may have congenital heart problems and hearing loss.
