Community Education at the Center for Disabilities
and Development provides training and education programs, often in the
community. People with disabilities, family members, professionals, service
providers, and others can take part in this training.
Training opportunities include:
- The Family Scholarship Program, which
provides financial assistance, as funds are available, to people with
disabilities and family members who want to attend conferences or workshops.
- Interdisciplinary seminars, which educate students
and interns about disability issues.
- "Iowa Talks," a daily radio show on WSUI at AM
910, brings listeners in eastern Iowa a range of perspectives on disabilities.
Staff members advise the station and sometimes act as co-hosts. Recent
topics: parks and trails accessibility, the impact of brain injuries
on families, and ethical issues surrounding assisted suicide.
- Iowa Communications Network (ICN) training for
professionals and families throughout Iowa, on such subjects as reading
disorders, assistive technology, and behavior disorders.
