Summer Undergraduate Research ProgramsStudents looking to enhance their research experience through participation in a summer research program have a wide breadth of choices at The University of Iowa. Student can choose from the formal programs listed below or contact faculty directly to inquire if an individual anrrangement can be coordinated during the summer months. Research participants in both cases have the opportunity to participate in a weekly seminar program specifically designed specifically for them. There are also social events planned that allow participants to meet their peers and interact with faculty in an informal setting. Biochemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships An eight-week program for college undergraduates providing research experience in structural, biophysical and molecular biochemistry supervised by department faculty. Flexible start dates and stipend provided. See contact person for application deadline. Free Radical & Radiation Biology Summer Program The program is designed to allow students to tailor their summer training to their own research interests, while providing a broad foundation in their area of concentration. This unique program provides research opportunities in the laboratories of faculty in the Free Radical and Radiation Biology Graduate Program. Research in free radical and radiation biology is quite interdisciplinary. Research ranges from studies of the fundamental chemistry of free radical reactions, to antioxidant enzymes; including their biophysics, biochemistry, biology and molecular biology. In addition, research also includes free radical pathology, epidemiological studies, and how radiation can be used to investigate normal and aberrant cell structure and function. Interdisciplinary Summer Undergraduate Research Program The program is designed to allow students to tailor their summer training to their own research interests, while providing a broad foundation in their area of concentration. This unique program provides research opportunities in the laboratories of faculty in Genetics, Immunology, Molecular & Cellular Biology, and Neuroscience. Iowa First Nations Summer Program An intensive three-week program for American Indian high school students affiliated with tribes/nations historically connected to Iowa in environmental, health, and life sciences. Program includes formal lectures, labs, field trips, and classes in computing and math. Room and board provided. See contact person for application deadline and program dates. Secondary Student Training Program (SSTP) High school students conduct research under the guidance of faculty mentors in a research area of their choice. Eligible participants must have completed grade 10 or 11 by summer and demonstrate high ability or motivation in science, social science, and/or mathematics. SSTP participants may receive three hours of graded University of Iowa credit. Financial assistance available. See contact person for application deadline and program dates. SROP/McNair Scholars Program This eight-week program involves research/scholarly work with a faculty mentor. Students from groups historically underrepresented in the humanities, arts, social sciences, engineering, and physical and natural sciences are eligible to apply. Must be a U. S. citizen or permanent resident. Students should have a minimum 3.0 GPA in their major field of study and be entering their junior year. Applicants must have a genuine interest in research and teaching as a career. All participants receive a competitive stipend. Travel, room, and board provided for out-of-state students, only. Summer Microbiology Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program A nine-week program designed for undergraduate students studying microbiology or other biological sciences who are interested in a career in science. Successful applicants will conduct research on a project they select under the direct supervision of a faculty member. Fellowships include a stipend and travel allowance. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have completed their sophomore or junior year toward a bachelor’s degree in a biological science by the summer they participate in the program. Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research (SUMR) Program The University of Iowa Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research (SUMR) Program offers an intensive experience for undergraduates interested in combined MD/PhD training for a career as a physician-scientist. The program provides students with rigorous experience in research laboratories and exposure to clinical medicine and medically-relevant research. The 8-10 week SUMR Program features research conducted in the laboratory of a faculty member in the biomedical sciences, shadowing of physician-scientists in a clinical setting, Emergency Room shadowing, weekly seminars presenting patient-based discussions emphasizing the intersection of science and medicine, career development seminars, and clinical case-based learning sessions. Eligible students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who anticipate graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the biological or physical sciences in the academic year following the summer of planned participation.
