Become a Tutor

Tutoring is one of the most rewarding and enjoyable jobs on campus. The satisfaction of having made a difference in someone's academic life is enormous. Tutoring also is a great way to hone your knowledge of a subject. The hours are flexible since the tutor arranges the meeting times and days with the tutee. Graduate students earn $13/hour.

Am I eligible to be a tutor?

The best tutors are University of Iowa graduate students who have received a grade of "B+" or better in the course in which they wish to tutor or applicable subject area. A good tutor must be able to teach another student how to study and review the course materials and to help them develop a long-range plan for the tutoring sessions based on the tutee's learning style needs.

There are three attributes that are key to being a good tutor:

  • Knowledge: Tutors are required to have strong working knowledge of specific course content. They also need to be able to assist the tutee in learning how to think and problem solve in the context of a specific discipline.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Tutors must demonstrate effective skills in working collaboratively with peers and teaching with compassion. They must be good problem solvers who are able to think and explain content in more than one way.
  • Organizational Abilities: Tutors must demonstrate abilities to manage tasks, maintain schedules, manage time and guide the tutoring sessions so the tutee will learn to study efficiently.
