Resources for Hispanic & Latino Students
The University of Iowa has been described by The Multicultural Student's Guide to Colleges as one of the most progressive universities for minorities in the Midwest and is ranked among the top 100 schools for Hispanic doctoral students by Hispanic Outlook magazine.
The University also is an associate member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, a leading advocate for increasing Hispanic access to higher education. The membership opens the door to numerous scholarships and networking opportunities for UI graduate students.
Support networks
- Latino/Native American Cultural Center—Visit this home-like atmosphere for studying and socializing on campus, and for programs and services.
- Latino and Native American Alumni Alliance (LaNA3)—This group's goal is to further the enrollment and advancement of Latino and Native American students, staff, and faculty at The University.
- Sigma Lambda Beta—This Latino fraternity was founded on the University of Iowa campus in 1986. There are now 72 chapters.
- Sigma Lambda Gamma—This Latina sorority was formed in 1990 by a group of 19 University of Iowa students.
- UI Student Organizations—There are more than 400 student organizations at Iowa. Those of interest may include the Alliance of Latinos Moving Ahead (ALMA), the Latino Graduate Student Association, and the Latin American Dance Club.
Education and advocacy
- Council on the Status of Latinos—This group addresses the needs and concerns of Latino faculty, staff, and students.
- Office of Equal Opportunity & Diversity—This University office supports and enhances the University's commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse community of faculty, staff, and students at Iowa.
- Office of Cultural Affairs & Diversity Initiatives, Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, 228 CMAB, medicine-diversity@uiowa.edu or 319/384-2952.
- Office of Graduate Ethnic Inclusion—This office in the Graduate College aims to build a sustainable practice of inclusion to attract and keep top underrepresented scholars in UI graduate programs. This office also supports underrepresented students interested in pursuing graduate study at Iowa.
- Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate—This organization's goal is to significantly increase the number of PhDs awarded to underrepresented U.S. minority students in engineering and the mathematical, physical, and life sciences.
- Ethnic Inclusion Effort for Iowa Engineering—The goal of this UI College of Engineering program is to increase underrepresented minorities in engineering and to promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for minorities at Iowa.
