Tom Throckmorton, M.D.
Comprehensive training yields complete physicians
"Without the University of Iowa, I think we
would have very few physicians in the state of Iowa. The UI helps
train physicians with a loyalty to the state, and without this
training, I fear we would be far below subsistence in physician
availability."
Tom Throckmorton believes that the University of Iowa Carver College
of Medicine provides "the whole package" for medical
education. The UI’s curriculum, according to Throckmorton,
is superbly designed by teaching the basic sciences and applying
this to practical application, thus enhancing understanding.
"The UI is particularly well rounded in all the clinical
disciplines, giving the medical student the necessary exposure
to those disciplines to become a complete physician and make a
decision regarding the medical specialty they may wish to pursue."
It is the UI’s well-roundedness and outstanding faculty
that make it a leader in medical education. Throckmorton believes
that many of his experiences while at the UI stemmed from these
mentors and faculty.
"My professional interests were shaped by interaction with
professors such as Dean Harden, Sidney Ziffren and Ruben Flocks.
Not only did they enjoy teaching, but they wanted you to learn
and understand because you were going to be responsible for caring
for patients."
Although the UI has a wealth of faculty and physicians, the same
is not true for the state of Iowa. Throckmorton feels that the
UI plays a major role in keeping physicians in Iowa as well as
giving them the best education possible.
"Without the University of Iowa, I think we would have very
few physicians in the state of Iowa. The UI helps train physicians
with a loyalty to the state, and without this training, I fear
we would be far below subsistence in physician availability."
In order to keep good physicians remaining in the state, the
UI Carver College of Medicine needs constant support from alumni
within the state and across the country. According to Throckmorton,
it is this support that helps determine the future of medicine
and healthcare in Iowa and the nation.
"The University of Iowa is certainly deserving of our continued
alumni support. The shaping and training that we received in and
of itself would be reason enough to support the Carver College
of Medicine. Perhaps, more urgently, the future of medicine in
the state of Iowa, and to a lesser extent, the entire country,
relies on institutions such as the UI to continue to provide education
and research for the health of our state and nation."
