Interviews:
Michael Kitchell, M.D.
"It is important to support in order to
make sure health care delivery across the state of Iowa is at its
best, and that starts with the education."
A strong reputation for clinical education led by a remarkable
faculty is what brought Michael Kitchell to Iowa. For a well-rounded
physician such as Kitchell, the University of Iowa Carver College
of Medicine, a well-rounded university, was the perfect match.
Kitchell felt Iowa offered him a superior education with great
clinical experience. While attending medical school Kitchell
was undecided regarding which specialty to pursue. The neurology
department at Iowa was strong and showed Kitchell how neurology
could satisfy his various needs.
"
I enjoy the combination of the physical, psychological and cognitive
aspects of neurology," Kitchell explains.
Kitchell continues
to remain close to the University. He and his wife, both former
Hawkeyes, contribute financially and are often
heard promoting the University to their colleagues.
Kitchell knows that a state’s health care is only as good
as the health care education provided, which is why he continues
to support Iowa. "It is important to support in order to make
sure health care delivery across the state of Iowa is at its best," and
that, he believes, "starts with the education," commented
Kitchell.
Kitchell has had a long interest in governmental issues
and health care, and in April 2003 testified on Medicare reimbursement
issues
at the Senate Finance Committee hearing on Medicare equity. He
also spoke at the National Health Policy Forum on Capitol Hill
in July before the congressional conference committee meetings
on the Medicare pharmaceutical bill. He has worked with Senator
Charles Grassley on Medicare reimbursement issues and has given
numerous presentations as an advocate for Medicare equity in Iowa
and rural America.
Kitchell has accepted numerous positions where
he has had an opportunity to make an impact. Currently he is the
president of McFarland Clinic
in Ames where he has been a neurologist for the past twenty-five
years, the region 2 (North-central and Northwest) representative
for the Board of the Iowa Medical Society, and is serving on the
University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine Alumni Board of Advisors.
By serving on the board he hopes to "keep Iowa’s education
and quality of care as high as possible."
When not in clinics
or Washington D.C., Kitchell, a remarkable athlete and avid runner,
can be found on the track. He also continues
to participate annually in the Iowa Games.
