Tony Brenneman
Making an impact as a physician assistant
" As I learned
more about the program I was determined to be accepted into the physician assistant
program at the University of Iowa, primarily because of the
relationship it has with the UI Carver College of Medicine, along with its
overall ranking in the U.S."
The University of Iowa is well known not only for its reputable
medical curriculum but also for its outstanding physician assistant
program. Tony Brenneman, a 1996 MPA graduate, is an excellent
example of the physician assistants who graduate from Iowa. The
program continually ranks as one of the top in the nation, provides
a wonderful connection with the medical school, provides state
of the art medical facilities and a supportive faculty.
Based
on Iowa’s strong reputation, Brenneman knew Iowa was
the school for him. "As I learned more about the program I
was determined to be accepted into the physician assistant program
at the University of Iowa, primarily because of the relationship
it has to the Carver College of Medicine school along with its
overall ranking in the U.S." he declares.
Following graduation
Brenneman began his physician assistant career at the University
of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in the Holden Comprehensive
Cancer Research Center as an inpatient physician assistant for
bone marrow transplant patients. There he provides care for patients
undergoing, preparing for, or re-hospitalized following a bone
marrow transplant. The job is challenging, however, Brenneman finds
the job extremely rewarding. The impact Brenneman is able to have
on his patients each day is above all why Brenneman continues to
work in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Taking an active role in education is another of Brenneman’s
passions.
"
I was interested in working at the University of Iowa where I could
have an opportunity to do teaching as well as health care."
Brenneman
continuously makes himself available to the physician assistant
program at Iowa for lectures, interviews and as a mentor
to students. He believes it is important to stay connected with
your alma mater because as an alumni you are able to provide encouragement,
support and excitement that other mentors are unable to offer.
Aside from working in the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and
lecturing Iowa students, Brenneman continues to remain actively
involved in his community. He is currently the chair of the
state Continuing Medical Education committee for the Iowa Physician
Assistant
Society and is also serving on the University of Iowa Medicine
Alumni Board of Advisors. Brenneman has hopes of providing
more
support for physician assistant students with their education,
and job searches.
