Jean E. Robillard, MD
UI Vice President for Medical Affairs
Jean E. Robillard, MD, is vice president for medical affairs at the University of Iowa. He began his appointment as vice president in January 2007, after serving four years as dean of the Carver College of Medicine, a position he continued to hold until June 2008.
Dr. Robillard is charged with integrating planning and operations for UI Health Care, which comprises University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics; the Carver College of Medicine; and University of Iowa Physicians, the state’s largest multi-specialty physician group practice. A powerful resource for Iowa, UI Health Care contributes more than $3.4 billion to the state’s economy and is responsible for over 25,000 jobs in the state.
As leader of Iowa’s only comprehensive academic medical center, Dr. Robillard has created a model for academic medicine in the 21st century and a world class enterprise. Under his vision and leadership, UI Health Care implemented its first ever strategic plan for the integrated enterprise and has expanded medical services to better meet the needs of Iowa’s communities, including a planned $73 million ambulatory care facility at Coralville’s Iowa River Landing.
With a life-long passion for the pursuit of discovery, Dr. Robillard also has been instrumental in shaping the future of research on campus by championing the John and Mary Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building project, which houses both the Pappajohn Biomedical Institute and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center. Scheduled for completion in 2014, the facility will be home base for high-risk, high-reward collaborative research aimed at finding cures for complex illnesses. The new space will allow collaborators across campus a chance to delve into disease and conditions of greatest concern for society, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, metabolic diseases, neurosciences and aging.
Dr. Robillard is a pediatric nephrologist whose work focuses on the developmental physiology of the kidney. He has published more than 220 scientific papers during his career, many of which have contributed to advances in the field.
Prior to his appointment as dean of the Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Robillard served as chair and professor of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School and physician-in-chief at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.
A native of Montreal, Dr. Robillard earned Bachelor’s and Medical degrees from the University of Montreal. Following post-doctoral training in Montreal, Los Angeles and Iowa City, he joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 1976 as an assistant professor. He was later promoted to professor in 1982 and appointed as vice chair of the Department of Pediatrics in 1987 while he was also director of the Pediatric Nephrology Division.
Dr. Robillard is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2006 served as Chair of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Pediatrics. He is also a member of the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the Iowa Business Council and Rotary International.
