Kenneth P. Kates is Chief Executive Officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) and Associate Vice President of UI Health Care.

As the executive leader of UIHC and the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, Kates oversees the operational, strategic and financial performance for the 729 bed regional referral center. Annually, UIHC admits over 30,000 inpatients, has over 800,000 ambulatory visits and generates over $1 billion in revenues.

Mr. Kates is focused on providing an extraordinary patient care experience at every level, with a constant eye toward patient safety, clinical excellence, outstanding service and strong financial performance. He is driven to make sure every patient visit exceeds expectations. Under his leadership, UIHC continues to receive recognition on US News and World Report’s list of “The Best Hospitals in America.”

As Associate Vice President, Kates works closely with University of Iowa Health Care leaders to advance UI Health Care’s mission of conducting world-class biomedical research, training the next generation of health professionals and administering unparalleled patient care.

Mr. Kates has more than 30 years of experience in academic health care. Prior to coming to Iowa, he held a number of executive positions at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System, including Vice President and Director of the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Interim President of the Hospitals and Health System. Before joining the University of Chicago, he held senior positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Mr. Kates received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration/marketing from Philadelphia University, and an M.B.A. in health administration from Temple University’s Fox School of Business in Philadelphia.

Mr. Kates serves on the Member Board of Directors of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and maintains an academic appointment in the University of Iowa’s College of Public Health. He is actively involved in the local community, serving as a member of the Iowa City Area Development Group and Rotary International, as well as on the Advisory Board of Directors for US Bank.
