A: Instruction of Residents/Fellows (No professional fee generated)        

  • Instruction not related to direct patient care; examples include:

o        Scheduled courses.

Research effort supported by department, college, graduate college, or Old Gold Summer Fellowship funds, not separately budgeted.  Developmental assignments related to research.  Proposal review for external agencies (e.g., NIH study sections) for which additional compensation is received.  Time related to externally sponsored projects should be reported under Sponsored Research – function code “N”.

 

I: Sponsored Projects Administration (Faculty only)

This code is to be used only by individuals who serve on Human Subjects Committee A, B, or C.

 

J: General Department Activities

·         Policy and other committee work that includes some benefit to sponsored research—Examples: representing college on Faculty Senate, faculty evaluation committee, human subjects experimentation review committees, (Committee D only).

·         Assigning faculty workloads.

·         Preparing departmental budgets.

·         Planning departmental operations.

·         Providing services, such as statistical, supportive of, but not chargeable to, sponsored projects (this does not mean charging grant cost overruns).

·         Writing and/or reviewing proposals

·         Professional development related jointly to all aspects of the department (short courses, professional meetings, developmental assignments).

 

K: UIHC Patient Related Committees and Administrative Activities

·         General management functions related to inpatient services, clinic services and operating room services and general supervision of laboratory, radiologic and other such hospital diagnostic and therapeutic services.

·         Facilities planning services on the hospital HAC standing and ad hoc committees and other hospital patient care program activities.

 

L: House Staff Program Administration

House Staff recruitment and selection, program development, rotation scheduling, committee activities and other such program management functions.

 

M: University-Wide Administration

Serve on University-wide charter or ad hoc committees such as Parking, Funded Retirement, Graduate Council, Academic Computer Service, Campus Planning, Human Rights, University Libraries, Research Council, Staff Council, Radiation Protection, BioSafety, and Animal Care.

 

N—Sponsored Research

·         All activity related to a specific externally or separately budgeted sponsored research and development activity or University budgeted research.  (Time for the independent research and study, under fellowships, not administered by the University while faculty member is on leave of absence should not be included.)

·         Examples:

o        Planning and experimental work on the awarded project.

o        Preparation of projected results.

o        Supervision of employees on project.

o        Correspondence and general participation in project related activities.

o        Readings directed toward projected goals.

o        Administrative effort related to a specific project.

·         Examples:

o        Outreach programs, which do not qualify as instruction or research.

o        Service on ad advisory committee for the government when the University is reimbursed.

o        Community and health service work supported by outside organizations.

o        Demonstration projects not classified as research or instruction.

 

P: Other University Activities

·         Facilities providing support work related to institutional services where costs are charged to the user.

·         Other institutional activities – scheduling patients, preparing reports for referring physicians, performing laboratory and diagnostic treatment services and preparing fee billings
