Alumni Interviews:
Nile Dusdieker, M.D.
Keeping His Practice Current
"One of the biggest challenges in medicine today
is keeping current."
A dedicated physician, an active member in his community, an accomplished
musician, and a family man, Nile Dusdieker, M.D., is recognized
for his many talents. In June 2002, this recognition included receiving
a Distinguished Alumni Award for Service from the University of
Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.
Dusdieker received his bachelor's degree in 1970 and his medical
degree in 1974 from the UI. He still maintains close ties with
colleagues at Iowa and teaches medical residents in both family
medicine and internal medicine.
"One of the biggest challenges in medicine today is keeping current," says
Dusdieker, an internist specializing in gastroenterology.
His clinical research, much of it in collaboration with UI faculty
researchers, helps him stay informed. In addition to his own work
on endoscopy monitoring, he has participated in studies of colorectal
polyp prevention and currently is collaborating on a study that
deals with treating inflammatory bowel disease.
As a private physician, Dusdieker served as president of his Cedar
Rapids group practice, helped form a physician-hospital organization,
and lectures on medical and professional topics. He and his wife,
Lois, who is also a UI alumna, are active in the education of their
three children.
Dusdieker is also an accomplished musician who earned a bachelor's
of music degree at the UI.
"Music has been an important part of our family's life," Dusdieker
says. "You want to see your kids excel at something because it
gives them an opportunity to learn things that they'll enjoy later
in life."
He has pursued other interests as well, serving 12 years on the
board of the Clear Creek-Amana School District, and he is an avid
gardener and president of the local Orchid Society.
Upon receiving the Distinguished Alumni Award, Dusdieker said
he was honored to be selected, reflecting that the UI has given
him "not only an education, but friendships and professional opportunities,
as well."
