Alumni
Interviews: Leo Milleman, M.D.
A passion for teachers
"I have a passion for those who teach. We need
to give back to those who taught us so much. Teachers are rewarded
the least, but where would so many of us be without them?"
Teachers are the foundation of a solid education, according to
Leo Milleman. He feels that teachers do so much for so many, yet
are the ones who are rewarded the least.
"I have a passion for those who teach. We need to give back to those who
taught us so much. Teachers are rewarded the least, but where would so many of
us be without them?"
Because of his passion for teaching, Milleman feels it is important
that teachers at all levels, especially at the collegiate level,
know how much they are valued.
He feels he received the excellent education he did at the University of
Iowa Carver College of Medicine because of great teachers like
Rubin Flocks.
"I feel a sense of loyalty and respect for these mentors and feel these
people need to be recognized. I have the resources now to give something back
to those who taught me."
Milleman also believes that all alumni should give something
back to the UI for the great education they received and the wonderful
mentors who
helped them through
their medical training.
"Today's graduating medical school classes should feel fortunate to
be at a great institution such as the UI. Now as alumni, it's time they
leave a little something behind. By giving back to their alma mater, they can
feel good about helping students who are in the same position they once were
in."
The UI has come through a very tough year and Milleman believes
that many real-world problems are reflected in the UI's transitions and changes. However, he
feels that everyone has adapted very well to the changes to the UI Carver College
of Medicine and has the utmost respect for the administration.
"I can not say enough good words about the UI's administration,
especially former Dean Kelch. The UI is facing heavy financial
burdens with budget cuts and students
paying higher tuition and fees. However, through it all, the UI
has remained strong in all three areas of medicine: teaching, research
and patient care." For
