Staying in tune with the medical student experience
"The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine
provides exposure to many renown educators and scientists who are
also great clinicians and excellent mentors. Iowa provides a very
friendly, non-threatening atmosphere for learning where questions
are always welcome."
As a recent graduate of the University of Iowa Carver College
of Medicine's M.D. and residency training programs and current
UI fellow in internal medicine, Kim Boddicker knows the reason
for the University of Iowa's strong reputation of balanced
excellence in academic medicine.
"The UI's program is one of the very best throughout the Midwest and
the U.S. because of its strong evidence-based training program. It has been very
active in the last several years developing modern teaching approaches and introduces
physical exam skills early on. The College also provides a strong base in primary
care and rural medicine, while providing the exposure only a large university
referral center can give."
Not so long ago, Boddicker was in the same shoes as many students
pondering where to attend medical school. Talking with students
now, she would argue
that the
UI supplies many opportunities and educational experiences for its students.
"The UI Carver College of Medicine provides exposure to
many renown educators and scientists who are also great clinicians
and
excellent
mentors. Iowa provides
a very friendly, non-threatening atmosphere for learning where questions
are always welcome."
Just as she would encourage students to attend the UI Carver
College of Medicine, Boddicker also urges alumni to become involved
in the education
and career
development of the UI's students.
"I think that alumni of the College can continue to be involved with education
and career development by continuing to work as community mentors on elective
rotations and providing their homes all over the country when students interview
for residencies."
Boddicker also believes that no one would be where they were
today without the help of donors, mentors and volunteers. This
also applies
to the
UI Carver College
of Medicine.
"I don't think that we would be where we are today without the mentors
and teachers we had during our early training. By giving back to our alma mater,
we can provide these valuable experiences to others in the impressionable time
in their career development. By giving back, we can provide students with a mentor
and make a difference in their careers."
