Alumni Interviews:
John Moyers, M.D.
Iowa delivers the complete package
"The University of Iowa provides a sense of
community among physicians in Iowa whether it be in professional
medical organizations, patient referrals, continuing medical education
or practice opportunities for trainees from the medical center."
John Moyers believes that the University of Iowa Carver College
of Medicine provides a unique education because of its abundant
and valuable resources and top-quality physicians and medical staff.
"Taking all aspects into account, the University of Iowa
Carver College of Medicine is the finest in the country, with excellent
programs in every area of graduate medical education."
Moyers has enjoyed this graduate education himself. Three generations
of his family attended the UI, and his father is also an alumnus
of the UI Carver College of Medicine. Moyers and his wife give
back to the university that offered them so much by being life
members of the UI President's Club and the UI Alumni Association.
"This is the least we can do after the University afforded
us such a wonderful education and professional life."
Moyers also believes that all alumni have a responsibility to
invest in the future of medical students, just as others invested
in his education.
As an alumnus, Moyers looks upon medical students today and sees
a bright future ahead for them as well as the rest of the community
and country. He believes that the UI is preparing these students
for successful careers and professions that will benefit everyone
in health-related fields.
"The quality of UI medical students and residents today
is excellent. I'm glad I don't have to compete with
them."
Because the UI trains nearly half of all physicians who practice
in Iowa, Moyers feels that this brings physicians closer together
and gives them a real connection to each other.
"The University of Iowa provides a sense of community among
physicians in Iowa whether it be in professional medical organizations,
patient referrals, continuing medical education or practice opportunities
for trainees from the medical center."
Moyers doesn't feel that the UI Carver College of Medicine
is just a value to doctors, students and residents. He sees it
as a resource to all who seek healthcare and believes that it is
a value to Iowans as taxpayers and patients.
"One merely needs to live in or visit a state without a
medical school or a mediocre one to realize how important a good
college of medicine is to the overall health of the citizens of
a state."
