Randy Davis, M.D.
Proud to be an Iowa graduate
“I had a very satisfying undergraduate experience at the University of Iowa, which led to my desire to remain at Iowa for medical school. In retrospect, I am very fortunate to have been educated at UI CCOM.”
Obtaining a medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine has benefits that last long after graduation. As an Iowa graduate, Randy Davis, 1982 M.D., is aware of his beneficial association with the University and is in no way hesitant to boast about his Iowa M.D. degree. When meeting prestigious graduates from the college Randy Davis is never shy to start his conversation by saying, “I’m an Iowa graduate too!”
When Davis was applying to college in the 1970s, geography was the main factor in choosing the University of Iowa. While attending the University Davis soon learned that Iowa was more than a well located institution and was capable of providing him with an excellent education. When it came time to choose a medical school Davis had an easy decision to make. For him, there was no other option other than the University of Iowa. “I had a very satisfying undergraduate experience at the University of Iowa, which led to my desire to remain at Iowa for medical school.”
Davis is most pleased with the abundance of specialties available to medical students at Iowa and the faculty’s availability and expertise. “There is no lack of exposure to any aspect of medicine.“ For Davis, being educated by such profound faculty led to numerous role models to aspire to be. “Such career role models existed for me at Carver College of Medicine. The teaching and patient interactions I witnessed embodied the type of physician I desired to become. I know those role models continue as several still remain on the medical teaching faculty.”
Over two decades later, Davis still feels connected to the University. He participates in the HOST program by opening his doors to fourth year medical students seeking residency programs, acting as a role model himself. Davis feels being a host allows him to stay in touch with the University and learn more about the Carver College of Medicine. “The visit allows me to compare the curriculum, faculty, and education today with my personal medical experience at Iowa.” Although encounters with the students are brief he is still proud of their accomplishments and proud of the University for producing such wonderful physicians.
Today Davis practices as a Hematologist and Medical Oncologist. He is involved with direct patient care relating to cancer treatment and coagulation disorders. It was the influence of several faculty physicians in Internal Medicine that peaked his interest and desire to work with cancer patients and treatment. The University of Iowa provided Davis with a solid background to become the physician he is today. “In retrospect, I am very fortunate to have been educated at UI Carver College of Medicine.” |
