Anne Beasley, M.D.
She received her inspiration at an early age
"One of the best things here at the UI is the great relationships the deans have with the students. You feel a sense that you are being taken care of and that they are working hard to make this the best experience possible."
At age 11, Anne Warrington began to accompany her mom to her job as an early childhood developer working in speech pathology. It was from this experience that she knew she also wanted to work with kids, but as a pediatrician.
Anne, who received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Iowa, is now in her second year of medical school at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. As an undergraduate, she was interested in doing research over the summer, and e-mailed Dr. Jeffrey Murray, M.D, in the Department of Pediatrics and Genetics. He immediately enlisted her in his research efforts, which focus on craniofacial abnormalities, specifically cleft lip and palate research. From that summer on, Anne has looked to Dr. Murray as an excellent mentor. She especially admires his ability to balance the demands of his career--which includes both research and patient care--with family. These are the footsteps she hopes to one-day duplicate.
Through her opportunity to work with Dr. Murray, Anne was able to put together a study on cleft lip and palate, which she will present in Atlanta, Georgia this December at the American Medical Association Conference.
Outside of working on her research and medical school, Anne works at promoting the UI Carver College of Medicine to prospective students through the Medical Student Ambassador program. In addition to directing tours and hosting lunches with interested high school and undergraduate students, she also works with elementary through junior high students. While she approaches each school level differently, her mission is the same: to inform younger students about medicine and medical education.
Being an Ambassador comes easy for Anne, because she is enthusiastic to support a college and university that has given her such a positive experience. She is impressed by the world-renowned researchers and "brilliant minds" that can be found right here at UI and finds the research opportunities here to be outstanding. Anne also enjoys the great relationships that the deans establish with the students. From day one she has felt encouraged to talk with them about any complaints or praises. She feels as though she is being taken care of and that they are working to make her experience the best possible.
Anne is looking forward to her first year on the Medical Alumni Board of Advisors. She hopes to learn how alumni stay in contact with the UI Carver College of Medicine and the current students. She also hopes to encourage better communication between the alumni and the current students to benefit both groups. But most importantly, she hopes to let the alumni know that all the support that they can give is truly appreciated by each and every student.
